Ryan glazer
Hi guys, Here's a photo of the glaze flaw I need to identify. Kind of a bronzish patch. Anyone else seen this defect? Full description in my other post Input greatly appreciated. S.
TJR
That turquoise glaze is tricky. If you get it on thin, it goes brown. I dip all my mugs in a bucket-fully immerse for 5 seconds. There is one material that flies around-soda ash? maybe? I am not in the studio at the moment. The thickness of the application seems to be crucial with this glaze. Check my gallery for some mugs and a teapot using a turqoise glaze. Using paper resist for the dots, then the glaze flashes on the bare spots. TJR. Marcia Selsor
I think it is thin because it is breaking over a sharp edge. I don't think it is a flaw, just the way it breaks over texture. Very rich color, I think. Marcia
Ryan glazer
Thanks for your replies. I'll try a thick application next time, TJR. Nice work on your red spotted turquoise Pots:) do you use copper carbonate or mason stain? Marcia - my photo was misleading, As it only shows the edge of the piece. In fact, the whole damn tile was affected, with random bronzy spots on the flats, too.
Babs
Was your tile textured? as this can be caused by thinning on "high spots' as the glaze pools the recessed areas.
TJR
I'm using a similar glaze to yours. That is how I know that it is your application of the glaze. I am using 4% copper carb. Tricky glaze. TJR.
Ryan glazer
Hi babs, No, it wasn't textured as such. More of a low relief cameo, which, I guess could cause pooling too. TJR - I'll certainly try a 4 second dip.
