Glazing Bowls

If do a total dip glazing inside and out at same time, can that be a problem? I've heard should glaze outside first, let dry overnight before glazing inside. Good policy? What can happen if dip all at once? Crawling? Cracking? Thanks in advance.

Generally the inside is glazed first, and the outside afterward, not the other way around. Prevents handling marks from showing on the inside. http://ceramics.wonderhowto.com/how-to/glaze-pottery-inside-and-outside-233898/ Tongs or finger mesh are employed to do both sides at the same time. As far as I know the technique in and of itself would not contribute to issues like cracking or crawling. Here is a link about the mesh.

I glaze the inside of my bowls, then as soon as I can glaze the outside, usually a few minutes. I have never had any of the above issues happen. I assume if your working with super thin pieces it could be an issue that your getting to much water in your piece and the clay is wet through the other side and thus the glaze doesn't coat well and crazes, but this is just an assumption.

lee, the video you suggest is one of the worst i have seen.  the person doing the glazing is using his hand without any gloves, scraping dry glaze off into the air, and not explaining why beginners should do the inside first clearly enough.  his demo is for "advanced students", whatever that means is his definition.  there must be a better example for a truly new person.

I usually dip the entire bowl first, unless it is too large for may glaze buckets. I also leave a foot ring that is grip-able in order to hold the piece with my fingers while dipping. Then I use a bulb bottles or old mugs to squirt/pour other glazes into the interior or exterior finish with some atomized or sprayed stencils.
