Lessons From Another Potter

Recommended Posts

I learned this from another potter long ago.

He makes more pots than I do as he is very prolific not that I'm not he is just a madman-well ok we both are.

Anyway I was asked on another thread about keeping track of my pots at a consignmet gallery.

His method which I to have adopted is once they have them and I have trust in them as owners I never keep track. His attitude is once dropped off-go make more and move forward the pots you made are thier problem (that is to sell). I have found this for me is the best path. On a side note this is for long term existing outlets not one you are just starting.

So say on a gallery I have been dealing with for 20 years keeping track of inventoiory -well thats not my

Job-my job is to supply . Make quaility work and keep them supplied in a timely manner.

Its also a trust realationship and its up to them to let me know in a timly manner whats needed before they run out. I only have a few of these outlets but this is how I run them from my end.

For wholesale its never your issue to keep track.

I was thinking this morning before I got out of bed that I had left a batch of pots at my local frame shop. This was before Christmas. Never heard a peep from them. No big fat cheques either. I better go get my work outta there and be a more responsible business person.

The key there is the word "wholesale".

The shop bought and paid for them.  The potter is paid.

If you are trying to "market" to them to get them to buy more stuff... that is one thing.  But if it is an established account....... they know where to find you.

Someplace you will have an invoice filed if you ever needed to know that you last sold them 100 mugs, 50 small bowls and a partridge in a pear tree.

CONSIGNMENT is a different ball of wax (and a rip-off for the artists........ interest free loan of the value of your work).

best,

In this case I would say you where framed.

TJR,

Yes... maybe you should call them up and talk to them so that you can get the whole picture.  ;)

This type of punmaking doesn't constitute "derailment" to me. It's funny and smart, and related to the topic. Derailment is more like changing the subject altogether, or personal oversharing.

Update needed Tom, it's the only way to stop the off-the-wall humour.
