Both. I think that clay affords more than just one purpose owing to its plastic character. I am a Libra, thus balance and more than one view is fun for me. I would be a sculptural vase with faces and forms from several views. The figures hold the flowers and fruits of the garden in the vase, and also provide a metaphor for the fruition of actions.

I would be as beautiful as the most glorious vase from the Ming dynasty, so that those who get great pleasure from looking at me will wonder how the potter could have sculptured anything so beautiful.

And I would be as functional as the hands of that potter, so that those fortunate enough to watch me working at my wheel will be in awe of the beautiful, fluid dance of my two hands as I make this vase.

I would not care to define myself in this manner. It is sort of like asking for "race". Race should not matter. I'm ceramic, born of clay.

I would be a functional very sculptural teapot. I would also have an amazing intricate carved design. As a perfect plus unlike every single coffee pot we have owned my spout would not drip.

Without a doubt, I would be both for the sheer enjoyment of beauty and intrigue that comes with sculpture yet to be pratical in my function of everyday life.

I was going to post something here about how I hope this isn't the beginning of a series of incredibly silly questions, but decided not to offend anyone by doing so.

Jim,

Nope.... the existing question pool ranges all over the place from mainly for fun to serious. Ceramists come from all sorts of "directions" in what they find engaging and useful....... so it will vary a lot from time to time deliberately. And what some people find "unnecessary" as to a discussion, others will find that valuable stuff comes out of it. And vice versa.

As I have mentioned in my Facebook postings linking to these questions........... if you have suggestions for possible questions please privately email them to me. We might already have it on the "list", and that will help maybe "push" it to the top choice. I'll get whatever you send into the "loop" with the other Board members and if it is one we think will "work", you will likely see it turn up eventually.

best,

Functional, because decorative just doesn't suit my visage any longer ;-) I would prefer to be a treasured everyday use piece, with some chipped edges and a nice matte glaze outside and something shiny for the liner. That may not be decorative, but it sure is a beautiful thing.

This is a tough one, but I would be functional-function so well that I am never left on a shelf. So pleasing to use that my value becomes priceless, too much to lose, and too much not to use. I would be ingeniously useful, so that one thinks of why I am the way I am, and why it pleases one to use me. I would hopefully cause the owner to be more cognizant of whom they are and why they exist when relating to me.
