Single Fire Test Cone 5-6 Tenmuko

Recommended Posts

Here is a recipe for a tenmoku glaze for cone 5-6 oxidation. The glaze is very forgiving and gives good coverage when brushed at about 60% solids. It is hard to see in the pictures but there are iron red spots in the glaze.

I can't remember where I got this glaze... probably Roy or Cushing. I decided to try it as a single fire glaze to see how it compared with bisque fired. I brushed it on the leather hard clay and let it dry, then fired it with the ordinary cone 5 cycle I use.

I really couldn't see any difference between the two types of glaze applications. I use MR-5 and Speckled Buff from Laguna. I thought the Speckled buff might give me a different surface, but it didn't

I don't make table ware so I don't know how this would hold up. There is nothing much in it that should cause toxicity problems.

I really like the appearance of this glaze, but my customers don't. Pots with this glaze seem to sell last, so I backed off of using it mostly. I made some up for a class and ran these test tiles to see how a single fire would work.
