  1. I have been experimenting with gold lustre over the past six months - simply applying it over a stoneware clear glaze. I accidentally applied it to an unglazed surface on one of my pieces but I really ended up enjoying the satin finish of the gold. I tried to replicate this finish but the gold flaked! I mean...I know all gold lustre instructions say to apply to a glazed body, but I figured it looked so good on my accident then perhaps I could replicate it, right? Wrong! I am looking for either a satin or matte clear glaze to apply onto a porcelain body so that the lustre can be have more of a satin or matte finish. This is for jewellery pieces, so I have some carving and slip detail added to the pendants, so ideally I don't want the glaze to hide the carving or slip trailing detail. It would be even better if this glaze could go in with my other pieces which I fire to 1260c, but not essential. - Ash
  2. Hi all. Can anyone please recommend some food safe, high fire, clear matte/satin glazes? I'll be using it over fired underglaze on slipcast mugs I'm working on. Amaco recommended their SM-10 (https://www.amaco.com/products/glaze-sm-10-clear?ref=2&taxon_id=284) to me, so I'm going to try that out. But I'd like to see what other people are using as well. They can be dippable, sprayable, brushable - anything. I just want to test some different products to find what I like best. Also, I understand that the matte/satin clears aren't entirely crystal clear in the way that gloss clears are, but how much of a difference is there? I'm relatively new to ceramics so any info will be helpful. Thanks!

    Turquoise stone and white matte on a dark red clay body. I threw the foot separately and attached when leather hard. It is slightly off balance, but will look nice holding my mini hanging succulents in the garden.

    Turquoise stone and white matte ^6 ox on calico dark red clay. A couple very wonky vases that developed decent sized cracks from uneven drying, this was one of the first things I made after taking a hiatus of 3 years from clay, be gentle! I needed to keep a few unsatisfactory pieces to try my experiments. I am totally head over heals in love with the color combo, but am very sad all the pieces developed pin holes on them... I talked to the professor and she is going to go over how to avoid that next time and keep my work together as to have a more consistent firing.

  7. Hi All! I am new to the Ceramic Arts Community! I made a few pieces both hand built and on the wheel with terracotta clay. I would like to glaze and fire my pieces in one fire with a clear matte finish. So my questions are... 1. Is it possible to skip the bisque fire and just glaze it and fire it once 2. What cone should I buy for my glaze? 3. Does anyone have any recommendations for clear matte glazes that would work for terracotta Thanks in advance!
  8. I've seen an ultra suede dry matte glaze used on earthenware. Is it a custome recipe? Done in colors too. Is it possible to get the same effect using other clays? See attached image. Thanks in advance for any information on the topic. MJ
  9. Hi, I'm new. Newly set up studio in garage...connected the kiln, focusing on tiles, still learning. I work with Standard 420 and 547 clay with lots of grog, and will fire to cone 6. I want to make some really earthy matte floor tiles, and am having a hard time finding matte glazes. The color range I am interested in is cream, burnt sienna , terra cotta (slightly pink?), earthy orange, mossy green, straw?. Attached is a pic.with colors that I love, but it is on a cement tile. Any suggestions on how to get this look- rustic texture and lovely variation on field tiles? It would be cool if these glazes blended/layered nicely with each other. Would they be sprayed on (I've never done that)? What about colorants to the clay and a clear matte glaze on top. I have little experience with colorants. I have never mixed my own glazes, but may be willing to learn (or have my local ceramic supplier mix them for me). Thanks very much. Happy to have this forum! Steph
  10. I have some glossy, white zirconium glaze (fires at 1030 - 1120 degrees c). It is too white, and too glossy for my purposes. Can anyone suggest any additions that would tone it down a bit, in one or both respects? I am using studio white earthenware and fire to cone 04 in my small electric kiln. The attached photo shows the finish. Many thanks.
