    I don't make many teapots, but I had the idea for this teapot with a hollow wave cut out of the body. It was an experiment, and it's not perfect but I still really like this piece. Wheel thrown and hand built with applied engobe and underglaze, sgraffito and hand painted waves. Fired to ^6 electric.

    This is my favorite piece I have made to date. I sold it about a year ago but haven't made another one yet. It's wheel thrown with applied colored engobes. It's hand carved and textured with pulled handles and commercial glazes. Fired to ^6 electric.

  6. Deborah Bedwell Workshop Surface Academy: Velvet Underglazes, Classroom Engobes and More! WS04 – Saturday, 10-4pm, May 21, 2016 Fee: $100 member/$115 non-member Scribble, doodle and dot! This 1-day workshop will introduce students to the colorful world of velvet underglazes, engobe slips and more. Participants will explore application techniques underneath glaze and on top of the glaze surface in this class. This class will encourage you to utilize line and color on your ceramic pieces while you learn how to bring a casual, playful, graphic sensibility to pottery making. Participants are encouraged to bring both leatherhard and bisque, either porcelain or stoneware, and experiment with the classroom materials. Open to all levels of artists with curious minds, previous clay experience is recommended, potters or hand-builders welcome. DEBORAH BEDWELL is one of the founding artists of Baltimore Clayworks and led the organization as the founding Executive Director from 1980-2011. Beginning in 2012 Deborah was elected NCECA President Elect. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Berea College (KY), a master’s degree from Towson State University (MD), and studied arts management at U. Mass. Amherst. She has received much acclaim for her success in creating Clayworks’ community arts programs, which has made the arts accessible to underserved individuals throughout Baltimore and the region. Her extensive knowledge of contemporary ceramics has taken her throughout the US and abroad where she has served as a panelist, curator, lecturer and workshop presenter. In addition she is an accomplished potter who continues to exhibit her clay work both locally and nationally.   8. EDIT 2 : January 2016 - I've tested the porcelain-paper-clay-based engobes, and I haven't noticed any difference. Even with regards to sgraffito, there's no difference that I can see. Thank you all for your input EDIT 1 : November 2015 - The answer seems to be "yes, of course it's possible". I'll update the message again once I've tried it for myself. posted November 2015 Hi ! *Background information :* I use an expensive porcelain, and generally go to great lengths to reclaim every scraps. I throw my pots on the wheel, and decorate my pots with home-made engobes that I formulate on the basis of a slip made from the same porcelain body, to which I add various pigments/stains/oxides etc. I usually use a commercial glaze, glossy transparent, and electric-fire between 1280°c and 1320°c (which converts to cone 9-10 ?). Last year, for the first time, I prepared a batch of paper-clay using the same porcelain body I usually use. After playing with it, I was left with a pile of bone-dry paper-clay. I crushed it, added water to slip consistency, sieved it through 80 mesh, and stored it in a bucket for 18 months. I'm now left with 30 liters (8 gallons ?) of porcelain-paper-clay slip that I'd like to use in some way. Hopefully as basis for engobe, because I need big quantities of it, and always find myself running short. But I'm concerned about the presence of paper fibers in the mix. Could it significantly affect the bonding between the slip and the pots during the drying process ? during the 1st firing ? Could it affect the texture of the surface of the pots ? Could it affect the color ? Could it cause significant issues with regards to the glazing ? *Question :* Can I use this porcelain-paper-clay slip without further a-do as a basis for engobe, as I usually do with "normal" porcelain slip ? If yes, great ! If no, what do you advise ? Is there something I could do to make this slip usable as a basis for engobe ? I'd be very thankful for your advice, if you had experience with this. Emma Disclaimer 1 : I've been working with clay for only 5 years, with my own studio for 6 months. I try to experiment as much as possible, but now that I have my own studio, I often feel too caught in the production process (to be able to live and pay rent !) to go as thoroughly and systematically as I'd like in the trial-and-error approach. Disclaimer 2 : English isn't my 1st language. I hope I managed to explain my process/problem clearly enough !

    Set of 3 Stacking Prep Bowls

    This was my first attempt at "production" (making three of the same size and shape). There is some variation but they turned out clearly a matching set! I was quite pleased. The inside was painted with a creamy yellow engobe before bisque firing, and the outside was decorated with the same engobe and coated with clear before the final firing. I wanted to see if the engobe would end up different colors but it didn't change a bit.

    This is a fun set of stacking prep bowls in white with yellow engobe inside and a vintage-looking design on the outside. I covered each bowl with clear and they came out really nicely.

    Wildflowers Batter Bowl, 24 oz

    I don't even want to talk about how long this took to make ... more a work of art than a production piece. But I enjoyed making it so much and this is the first piece I've ever made that came out even better than I imagined. I love everything about it (this never happens to me). I used white slip on the inside of the bowl and white engobe on the flowers so the colors would show true. It worked very well, but some of the little speckles showed through anyway, which I found completely charming.

    This vase is about 6 square. I threw it then carved grooves in the top and bottom. The grooved sections get a couple coats of black engobe because I like the way the glaze looks over the black. The middle is black engobe with paper branches then blue engobe then the paper is peeled off. It has commercial glazes and was fired to cone 6 in my electric kiln. I tried to get fancy with the picture.

    This is a jar I threw in one piece, incised the lid then trimmed them apart. The whole piece is covered in various engobes and underglazes, carved and fired in an electric kiln.

    This was a custom order I completed last year. I love the way it came out. It's wheel thrown, with thrown feet. applied engobe and underglaze, hand painted and textured. Commercial glazes fired ^6 electric.
