Loading a packed kiln full of beginning student sculptures, is like putting an egg, full of nitroglycerin, into a bin full of more of those exact same explosive eggs. One wrong move and everything goes...

End of year firing were always fun. Especially those that had mixed loads of bisque and glaze when firing ^06.

glazenerd, that goes without saying when you teach ceramics to kids. Heavy thick walled areas is not unusual, no matter how hard you try to get them to understand the problems with overweight poorly constructed ware.

I did focus more on gardening today. Planted pansies and geraniums. BUT I now better than to plant tomatoes too soon. Not yet, Must wait a few weeks. They'll be safe being portable.

We have bears and deer plus many turkeys and very short growing season. I hope to get a greenhouse together for the next season. In my old place in Huntley , Montana , I had a huge garden with irrigation. Corn, beans, beets, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, etc. I love gardening. Too many bugs and too hot in Tx. where we lived.Herbs were the only survivors.

I have had a far more difficult time getting my glazes right than any other aspect of ceramics. I rarely have issues of any kind with the making process, if I'm going to have a problem it's always with the glazing. It can be really discouraging and the journey to success is different for everyone. It's such a disappointment when time after time you open the kiln and the results you see don't match the one you were going for. :(

Giselle. I can get my glazes pretty good now. I struggled with replicating results for a long time. But now my real problem is just picking a glaze and sticking to it. Although maybe it isn't a real problem. I do need to start using some glazes on actual work and listing it online for sale. I think I am just going to make yunomi and cups with handles for a while. They are my favorite to make anyways.

I tend to stick to about a half-dozen glazes, I don't think that's too many. How many do you have?

I am finishing chapter 3 on my clay formulation book. Each chapter is running about 4000 words each. I think it will take almost 9-10 chapters to throughly explain the clay codes. Wonder how many could sit through that many chapters on clay?

I love reference books. I own 1 fiction book and like 500 reference books. So I could sit through it. = ) But I am probably your direct target market.

I am going to include chapters on diagnosing clay problems. Which will also include a section on analyzing clay specs.trying to assemble an index on all available ball & kaolin clay- some mines do not have much data.

Nye, Montana about 45 minutes away. Beautiful area in the foothills to the Absoroka range. Former mining town now vacation homes. Gallery is only open for summer and this week heavy spring snow knocked out the power.
