  1. I use a plastic bowl for water . Its a wide open form -I keep a cut shammy on the lip and few sponges in it. I get fresh warm water every throwing day from electric tea kettle-my guess is 1/2 +gallon of water-less water the better in terms of throwing
  2. Well it's looking like the second quarter in terms of Pottery sales has been slow-same as the first quarter. This is showing in my retail/wholesale outlets . The economy in our small backwater community is always lagging behind the national scene . Its been a bust and boom economy localy for all my time living here. This area was once king to Redwood timberr sales (when I moved here over 53 years ago). Then that went bust and Weed growing took over until thats gone bust in past years. Now its in between the next thing. The toursit industry has been steady thru it all and thats a season flow for te shops and galleries . Now that I no longer travel with pots out of the area so I'm now subject once again to this cycle except to one very large wholesale gallery far away from here wich I'm working on a huge twice a year order right now. In terms of my slowing down work wise this actually has worked well for me..I need to stock up for the summer trade season soon aas well. Not sure about te rest of the country but here pottery sales are slower than past years at this time locally.
  3. When I have lumpy materials I just weigh them dry and put them in my shop blender with a bit of water and dump into the wet glaze batch -just put it on magarita mix for a few minutes . Makes anything smoth in minutes but wait theres more- it liquifies and is as smooth as silk in mere minutes and you to can pick one up for just one low payment at any thrift store
  4. Great story on this as a production potter who has been hauling around a old Brent formica flat top wheel like the one I bought from Robert Brent himself in 1970. That wheel was only a frame and wheelhead with large pulley some gave him decades ago. These parts make that wheel a working wheel as they just bolt on . He workes in SF bay area which is close by and in the future we will meet up and talk story.
  5. As Bill Noted drilling is last resort ,Try many options before that one and if it comes to that a cobalt bit made for tough metals is key
  6. Yes that that is all true I think . I have never had a reversing wheel or for that matter wanted one.
  7. This is a complete working Brent Model B setup all connected and ready to plug into a wheel top.( minus the wheel table with legs and wheel head and large pulley that fits on wheelhead shaft) These you will need to supply. It's a complete kit working and all wired as one. Tested and all working fine. I bought this a while back thinking I may need the parts and never did need them. Its a Model B motor and model B controller (Controller and foot pedal all work on models B,C and CXC) This controller only spins the wheel one way and it does not have a reversing switch on back. The fuze holder cap is missing a small chuck on side , but works fine a new one on Amaco/Brent website is $16 Motor is 1/3 hp 2200 RPM 115V DC that is 3 amps -(see motor close up photo) with a 4 grove pulley and it comes with a 4 grove belt which fits a model B or C or a CXC as long as they bare all 4 groove . Brent changed the belts around a few time in terms of how many grooves. This can fix any Brent wheel almost ,that for example needs a new controller or a foot pedal. The Model B, C and CXC that both use a larger hp motor so the motor can work its just less power than say a model C with 1/2 motor Other than the motor all the other components work on a Model B,C or CXC. The kit includes the 4 rubber motor mounts with bolts to cushion the motor on a Brent metal mounting plate. These components new total roughly $1,200 + new The new motor is $550 for example and the controller box is $350 foot pedal complete is $300 It could be adapted to work on any Pottery wheel if you are handy and its a belt driven Pottery Wheel Asking $ 600 OBO shipping is flat rate Priority mail large box $21 I have this for sale on many platforms right now and thought I would pots it here as well-Pm me if interested Mark
  8. You bring up a great point Rae about our pots that we have at home either ours or made by others. Some go to family members I'm sure like my dinnerware. Though none of my family members want or know much of the more famous works I own like Otto Heino's or Tom Coleman's or Warren McKenzies work. I am on the fence about these works sell them? or what? as they are potters pots. Since I have been downsizing for over 5 years now its come up in my brain a few times. My wife does not care about these objects its all me on them .Of course I knew these potters and we traded pots with most but with Coleman it was a small fee. Warren was such a nice real person and Otto had the best stories. So the pots mean more to me than say just paying for them. Its a conundrum for sure as to what to do with them.
  9. Our lifes big stuff is in a trust-Property etc. autos .boats etc are in both names and we havea plan with all that . The trust outlines our wishes . The ceramic part of my life is not in that plan so I need to have a plan and it should be soon . The schools here ( two collages no longer have good ceramic programs) one is not working now in my temp range so my high fire kilns would be of zero interest .My 5 wheels and the electrcic are easy low hanging fruit to sell. The shear volume of materials may be another thing . The property would be best for a working potter but these days that a pie in the sky idea. I need to work on a plan and a plan B. If you are a full timer and on the west coast send me a pm if your are willing to take it all when that day comes . It includes gas kilns, two that move as units , two that are a pile of bricks.more bricks fiber, much in new boxes ,more bricks and a few tons of dry materils-you need to be much younger that I by the way and have a great back and a large lift gate truck. I have gone thru this death deal a lot already with my family so I know this path and we have no children only nephews who are in the loop with the trust so that part is done. I once was going to give it all to the local state collage but that plan went to heck when they plan on tearing down the ceramics lab and no longer have anyone but temperory lectures teaching. Longevity is not on my side of the family as I'm the oldest male in over 100 years to have lived this long. I think clay has a lot to do with that for me.
  10. If one is thinking about using commercial wash .I would make my own wash and remove with a wet sponge before firing any commercial wash as it usually poor quality. Speaking of quailty wash I noticed on the Advander shelve (kiln shelve.com ) site they use the same formula as I posted years ago 1/2 alumina hydrate 1/4 epk 1/4 calcined EPK or (glowmax)

  12. My guess is freezing as well-one to many, but really trial and error is the only wat to know.
