  1. One minor wound on my hand from the metal but I'm ok- did the basic construction of the raku kiln frame today then took it to a metal shop for a clean up of my work plus some nice big handles.

      super glue the wound-works great

take care of your hand. I had to get a 1/4" piece of glass removed surgically from the back of my finger when I was drilling a support on the wall and leaned back on the floor. that took a while to heal. Keep your cut clean.

  2. I put a picture of what I've collected to build this so far on the gallery.

  3. & so it begins. Picked up my wire this morning.

nice wire. I am going to use 2" wide flashing on my new one.

  4. just recycled a s___t load of Polar Ice. Its so expensive that you can't toss this stuff. Made out of  New Zealand halloysite.

Speaking of Plainsman, have you used any of their clays in ^10 soda?

      terrim8

For salt & soda : P700, H570 & H550. I like them all but 570 mixed with 550 is my favourite & it has a few speckles - Callie recommended that mix. The P700 is nice and even translucent a bit in part, even covered with slip when you hold something up to the light! I guess so far I have only used their clay.

Plainsman doesn't get involved in exploration, other than within a short radius around Medicine Hat.

ashamed to say that I called in one of my kids to help- I used word - which I'm used to and she'll convert it to pages that has a prettier template- Some days...............

That's what kids are for :D I used to type up most of my mums stuff because it would take me 1/10th of the time.

Problem is the conversion from Word etc. to Pages etc.and vice-versa is not always a two-way street. It is hard to shift from one system to another when one way is virtually automatic from years of experience and the "new" one has been perversely set up to be "backwards" & everything is in weird places. I feel your pain!

  6. freezing in my basement studio today

Not been in my studio since mid November. Had the flu most of December, and the 0-10 degree weather does not suit me these days. I can heat my studio, just did not feel like doing it this year.

  7. I wish there was an easy way to turn a caternary arch kiln into a salt kiln. I'm too lazy to rebuild it so I guess driving across the province to a salt kiln is my only option right now.

I thought of that but I currently have a brick up (then brick down) style door and part of that  is scavenged soft brick. Looks like a few "denaros" would be required to build a door.

    3. Mark C.

      Mark C.

The bricks can be coated on the insides. You can then spray the salt in thru the burners via a garden sprayer.

the ITC stuff??? Or is there another product? Do you have to be concerned about it falling off into the ware??? Do you use it?

Jealous! Are you going to check out that store with the weird spray painted tumbleweeds again?

    4. terrim8

      terrim8

No- I didn't have time! The course was extremely concentrated time wise. i even showed up early as the key fob lets you in- like 6 am once! It might have been easier if I had some experience with it but I didn't and it moved fast. only 1 lathe too so I tried to get in early for that. And it was HOT!!!!!! I didn't even have time for carrot cake!

  10. I took a Shibori style fabric dye course. The concepts are useful for ceramics too and there are some common ingredients. Lots of fun!

we've always used pattern resists but there's some ideas that translate other than fabric folding.

  11. I made a large porcelain bowl. It is 14 inches tall and 22 inches in diameter. Think I need to support it for the cone 6 firing?

    1. terrim8

      terrim8

the foot is kind of small- about 6 inches diameter. It's handbuilt- not thrown.

    2. glazenerd

      glazenerd

Depends on the clay, wall thickness. The fact you are not sure, suggests maybe you should.

Let us know what you do and the outcome. I always wonder about those things.

  12. just realized why I like Plainsmans M340 cone 6 body. It has muscovite in it! I just ribbed a pie plate very smoothly and noticed the sparkles in the sun.

I had a student /rancher that said Plainsman clay got their clay from her Montana ranch. I don't know what part of a clay body it is. I have used M340 when I taught in Billings.

interesting- they are close to the border so I guess they operate all around the area.

  13. how long would it take you to throw 100 mugs? I think it would take me all week.

  14. trying out my rebuilt little Paragon kiln to cone 6 today. I usually just use it to bisque but the electrician said it can go to 6 but the elements won't last as long. I wonder what that means exactly....

      Marko

I have a A82B Paragon kiln that I fire to ^6 without any problems. It has actually saved me when my big kiln went down.

    3. Marko

      Marko

Unless the electrician checked the ohms on the elements. And the condition. I don't think he could make that assessment.

    4. terrim8

      terrim8

believe it or not, it was a bit of kiln brick fragment stuck way deep in the sitter.  Its fixed now.

I should start shopping for a used nice electric kiln with a controller. Maybe I can find one in the US and ship it back across the border????

  15. trying a quick dry method- involves trimmed mugs, 2 fans and outdoors in warm & unusually humid air for our area.

I will be planting roses this week and mining with each rose.

  17. that lab is slow. I think I'm stuck behind a big order they're working on. I'll show pictures of the new glaze as soon as I pass the tests!

If they're running Dean Starks, or anything else related to core, you're probably not their priority right now. You'd likely get faster service in the summer.

  18. still testing glazes....but making things while I wait for results.

      glazenerd

We going to see these results?

    2. terrim8
