Well, you can pull several long, consistently thick handles, and then cut them into small sections to fit on the smaller wares. I guess it all depends on whether not you are keeping them, in which case your desired vessel-type will dictate the need for a handle. Or, if they will just be recycled, in which case get some handle practice, while you can.

True I need practice pulling handles. Went to trim today cylinders almost bone dry. :(. I'll make more

  2. From the album: Today's (zen) practice

I ve been away from wheel for a few weeks. Struggled with a few bowls a few days ago. I needed to go back and "practice". The first five were a struggle, some were a fight. I struggled with centering, I crashed a few on purpose, I crashed a few due to bad technique. Cylinders 6 - 17 found the zone they .........flowed.....they just. Happened!!
  3. Made a 137 # batch of clay today.......I wore a t least a pound. My rope handled bucket wasn't big enough......

Nice work, they're some fine pieces.

  8. Marcia did you do a test with more colorants? Is this porcelaineous clay?
  9. Frustrated was unable to trim yesterday's practice. I need to remind myself porcelain is quirky. I you can't rush poreclain. It took substandard trimming on a few pieces before I realized. Then it took me way to long to switch gears and be productive. :(

There are a lot of metrosexual men out there who are as high maintenance as porcelain! : )

I switch all the time between porcelain and stoneware. It's easier on my back to use porcelain. But I love making stoneware mugs and bowls.

Any sort of clay in the Spring time can be quirky as you never know if the moisture level in the air is going to slow or speed drying. Spring is the thing, not the clay

  10. Frustrated yesterday's practice was not properly dry to,trim

  11. Cylinders practice today. Not a thousand yet.....(see gallery)

Ok a few guinomi off the hump thrown in. It's still my return to cylinders. A little creative liscence in some bellying, but primarily cylinders. Enough bottom to trim to yunomi, or recover, + one plate in slump mold.

The black ones are just clay and newspaper redux. The others are Hawaiian blue raku in varying thickness, on 2 different clay bodies, also with newspaper reduction.
  14. First raku (western raku). Me likes. See gallery

Of course, we dare not call this 'fun' or 'playing with fire'...but as Ben says, "it's addictive".
