Just got my first Bison carbide cutting tool . It will be a little while before I get to using it since I'm in the process of getting my little farm ready to plant. Also working on glazing another 20 or so pieces before I start throwing again.

I keep mine in a wall mounted plastic tube next to trimming wheel. Mine is accustom small double ender. Its either in the tube or my hand no other place ever. Of course I have a few spares as I do wear them out in a few years and send them back for new tips.There really is no reason to burn thru cheap carbon steel tools like butter melting in the sun when you are doing this like i do.

Hi All y’All…Just wanted to let you know that I’m going in for hand surgery in a couple of hours to fix a trigger finger and maybe another potential problem call Dupuytrens Contracture…I’m expecting all to go well, but may not be at the keyboard for a couple of days and the clay for about a month...we’ll see…

All went well with the surgery now that all my fingers have gotten normal sensation. Up until about 10PM last night I was concerned because the ring finger was still numb and I thought there might have been some nerve damage, but sensation started to return before I went to bed. This morning, everything is about as normal as can be expected after a surgery. It will be about a month before I can resume normal everyday activities.

Going to have the 2 trigger fingers on my left hand repaired in two weeks. I'll try to get some pots thrown before since I'll be away from the wheel for a few weeks after the surgery...

I had my middle trigger finger on my right hand and carpal tunnel release 4 weeks ago. Both incisions are still healing, my trigger finger is still very painful and hasn't straightened yet. The therapist said it was too early for that, I go back in two weeks to check it. I do my therapy exercises three times a day, yesterday was the first day I didn't have to ice it for swelling. I am still on lifting restrictions my hand doctor says I should be able to do anything I want by the middle of January. I was suppose to have it done last spring but I had to many other sick relatives to help. It will be nice to be able to open a jar, cut my own steak and not drop half of the things I pick up. I hope your doctor is as good as my doctor thinks he is. Denice

Actually, my surgeon has repaired both my thumbs which had bone to bone contact at the base of each thumb due to arthritis. Those repairs totally recovered in about 6 months each, and he took care of my trigger ring finger last year with total recovery in less than a month, so I'm not anticipating any problems with the upcoming surgery and should be back at the wheel by mid-February. It could be sooner, but I've tried the latex glove route before and it didn't work for me. There's just something about the wet clay on bare skin...

A milestone for me today as I threw my first 5 pound pot and it didn't collapse on me. It will be a horsehair Raku pot purchased by my wife's uncle as a gift for his son and daughter-in-law who are horse people...

It's like you need a miterbox with a fine wire instead of a saw. Would need the clay to be fairly stiff though so it doesn't just squash down. Maybe supporting the tubes with thick foam underneath so the wire could make a clean cut right the way through? (just thinking outloud)

Just curious---are you working creamains into the clay body and/or the glazes or are these containers soley to put the ashes in?

I just extruded the tubes last night and I could still work them into the surface, but before I attach the tubes, I'll talk with my friend to find out if he wants the ashes worked into the surface. He was happy with the first jar that I made with the ashes embedded into the surface but changed his mind when he saw the bud vase design and color...so at this point the answer is up in the air...

Just got notification that "Another Horsehair Raku Trio" was accepted for this year's PBS station art auction. They were happy to get the new contribution since last year's went over so well.

I was just reminded how fragile bone-dry greenware is when I was transporting a stack of berry bowls from my studio to my garage to load into the kiln...broke 2. Will open the kiln this afternoon to unload 40 pieces and get ready for glazing and horsehair Raku...

One loss in the firing...a lid came apart on the jar it was made for...might have been a tad tight. I'll just have to make another lid. Otherwise, all went well...glazing to follow.

are you going to ask for a cat drawing to use as a logo? that might be fun, even if the suggestions are ridiculous and you never use one of them. i can see an oblivious cat slinking along with paw prints behind her in freshly made plates.

Hey, Pres, How 'bout this for QOTW: How do you see yourself in clay?
One of the things about taking college level Ceramics courses it the challenges you are presented with. In the last course I took on Raku the professor had a thing for Xian warriors...the terracotta army unearthed in China. One of our assignments was to sculpt a version of one of these figures...with a twist. We had to incorporate some aspect of our current life situation into the sculpture. I don't consider myself a sculptor, but I wanted to give it my best shot. Since my primary interests at this point in my life are ceramics, farming, and photography but none of the statues were suitable for the pottery or photography aspects, I chose the farmer idea. It was a real challenge, but a productive one. Here is a photo of my Raku "John Warrior" self-portrait. , and the challenge..."How do you see yourself in Clay".

Pix of the latest glaze run...the customer bought 13 instead of 10 bowls. 18-54,55 2nd is the same glaze pattern after removal of a defect in each bowl and firing again. All are Amaco PC glazes layered for effects. In some cases Duncan's RG704 Shino Cream was banded to create the white edge runs...

Got an order for 10 medium bowls for Christmas gifts...when asked about color, the customer said "Just work your glaze magic!", sooo...pix in about a week or so.

It ends my drying time outside as the sun has lost its power to dry my pots outside . That means I have the heater going in studio and its hot in there and you learn to work in the heat.T -shirt weather always until x-mas production is done.Shop was over 80 yesterday to dry pots before todays bisque load.
