  1. I happened to hear about Warren, from a channel I follow on Youtube. I've watched multiple videos, documenting his process. I am *still* in awe of how he was able to keep going with pottery, even in his later years. I also chuckle at his insistence, that he do everything himself, because he couldn't find anyone to do it, just how he wanted it. His influence will continue to be felt.
  2. Sorry to hear that. Doesn't it always seem, that a Rube Goldberg series of events, leads to such things? For me, I know it's the case, because I don't clear the clutter as much as I should. So if one thing gets hit, or shoved, several other things are going with it.
  3. I'll have, what we call, "Service Learners" help me with loading and unloading. They are students, who get a grade, for helping teachers. I only accept students, who I've had in class, and who I trust to do a wide variety of tasks, load/ unload the kiln, make test tiles, cut photo paper and mix darkroom chemicals. Oh, and and one of my, and probably their least favorite, redo the wash on the kiln shelves!
  4. Art teachers are really good at three-dimensional Tetris! The worst however, is when you get so far in loading, and find something that either; A. Would fit better on a different spot, or B. You forgot about all together, because you had it sitting aside (Sometimes sitting aside, so you didn't forget about it...) I have had to unload, just to reload before. A lot of heavy sighing is involved...
  5. Heads up, to anyone looking for a kiln on the East Coast.  Govdeal.com  has a good looking Skutt, with a digital controller.  The bids are currently low, and will likely jump, but worth looking into.  I nearly got a kiln off the same site, a couple years ago, for between 3-400.  I lost it last second.

There is also one listed on the same site, that is about an hour away from me.  It is listed as "Not working", but might be worth it for me pursue.  It does look as if there is some damage to the bottom bricks, possible an extreme glaze mess!

  6. Awesome Mark! Where did you find that wheel? I've come across that model online a few times. It looks like Brent's take on the Shimpo RK. Speaking of, I have a RK, in my classroom, that I've been meaning to restore. It works well enough, but the attached splash pan is toast, and the inner workings need a good once (or twice) over. And while I'm at it, maybe a new, dynamic paint job... I guess I could also mention my "Workbench" in my classroom, that has way more projects than necessary going on at one time. In the fall, I have an Amaco wheel I was fixing, student projects, that I was repairing, glazes and slips I was mixing, project demos/ examples, etc. Every year I promise myself I will keep the space cleaner. And every year, it ends up looking the same...
  7. Right now, I have some wood working stuff on my bench. I'm trying to finish up some night stands, that I made for my Wife, as a gift for her birthday... Which was in December... I've done some cleaning recently, as I am going into Graduation Mug Mode, for my students.
  8. I've been throwing for fifteen years or so, and I will still leave a bit too much at the base occasionally (Especially with newer forms). Some of it is just getting a feel for what a thick base feels like, and what a thinner base feels like. I also drag my thumb along the base, to create a groove, before beginning some of my pulls. It gives your fingers a path to follow, and has helped me pull more clay, than just a normal pull.

Great design, with the multiple handles/ lugs. I like how the glaze flows around them. Looking through your gallery, you have such a great variety of unique forms. Very inspiring!
  10. Started off by getting my wheels down from their storage spot. Then it went to giving them a good scrubbing. It quickly became me taking them apart, to really scrub off the decades of build up and lubricate the necessary parts...

How much an hour does scrubbing go for? I have about 20 hours worth. Send applications to: nerdsstudiopigpen.com

  11. Getting my classroom set up, and turned over my Shimpo RK wheel. The inner workings are spotless! The outside has a bit of wear and tear, appropriate for its age, but the inside looks new. Wasn't expecting that!
